There’s a song “when my baby, when my baby smiles at me, I go to Rio, de Janeiro.” It’s a very lively, fun song, & the first time I heard it, it firmly planted in my mind that Rio de Janeiro must be a fun, exciting, energising place . So, that’s why, it’s been on my ‘bucket list’ of places to visit before I “kick the bucket”!
I’m sure everybody has also seen incredible, colourful excilarating pictures of the world famous ‘Mardi Gras’. This is held in Rio de Janeiro every year, & it brings thousands of tourists from around the world, who want to experience the ‘party of a lifetime’ by immersing themselves in the Mardi Gras parade & atmosphere.
So, can you imagine how I felt, when, as a show host Singapore, I was asked to host three events in Rio? I jumped up & down was ‘over the moon’, barely able to control myself with excitement.
Well the day to board the plane finally came & my husband & I were off on the adventure of a lifetime. There was only one difficulty for me as a show host in Singapore, & that was the flight. We boarded the plane in Singapore, but we had to do an 18 hour stopover in Dubai before catching our connecting flight to Rio. We took the opportunity to do a tour of Dubai while we were there, but that’s something I’ll tell you about later.
Beautiful Rio De Janerio
Finally, after a 14 hour flight, we touched down in Rio, & it’s every bit as beautiful as you see in the postcards.
The first tourist attraction we saw was the amazing ‘Christ the Redeemer’ Statue which sits high atop a mountain, overlooking & protecting Rio. In the taxi, on the way to our hotel we also passed the famous ‘Sugar Loaf’ mountain. It gets the name ‘Sugar Loaf’ because it’s shaped like the bags that used to transport sugar in the olden days.
Then we arrived at our digs on the stunning Copacabana beach. Again, it’s so famous because of the songs written about it. The view from our apartment was breath taking, & we could see all the way along the beach from Leme to the Fort. It was wonderful to just sit & watch the people pass by. A lot of joggers, people walking their dogs & of course the ‘hunky’ guys working out on the gym equipment on the beach & the beautiful babes in their skimpy bikinis. It really is just like it looks in the movies.
We hired a guide to drive us around & he was so interesting. Of course he took us to all the usual tourist places, but, he was kind enough to take us off the beaten track to the hidden side of Rio. I will always cherish this, as I feel I really got to see the under belly of the place.
Our guide even took us through the Favella’s, which are the illegal towns where people just set up their own houses & dwellings. Surprisingly, I would say about 60% of the population live in one of the many Favella’s surrounding Rio de Janeiro.
We went to museums, we strolled along the famous Ipanema beach, we went to the Samba city, had a Capirinha (a delicious Brazilian cocktail) on Sugar Loaf mountain. We went to all the famous spots, but, for myself, personally, the highlight of the trip was when I went Hang Gliding off the top of a mountain & after soaring through the air for about 10 minutes I came to a safe landing with my hang gliding pilot on the ‘landing strip’- which was actually another beautiful Brazilian beach.
As a show host from Singapore I feel I’m really blessed & incredibly lucky to be able to visit such fabulous, exotic places like Rio de Janeiro. Everyone should try to visit at least once.
