A few years ago, a young female emcee Singapore asked me how I managed to stay so calm, cool & focused before an event. She really worked herself up into a ‘Fever’ with stage fright, & in fact it was her downfall. She’s now completely left the female emcee Singapore industry, which is such a shame, because she was a talented, funny, charismatic girl.
So this topic is something worth looking into, because I guess a lot of people encounter this problem.
Getting Off The Comfort Zone
Firstly, one of my favourite sayings is “If you’re not living on the edge, you’re taking up too much space”. So, I always remind myself that I need to push – push – and push some more. There’s nothing worse than getting ‘stuck in a rut’ or falling into a ‘comfort zone’.
When I was in Rio de Janeiro this year for 3 events, I had the opportunity to go ‘hang-gliding’ from the top of a mountain. Did I do it – Hell yeh! To me, jumping off the mountain was scary – but what was even scarier, was not jumping off. Why?
Because I would have been defeated – not by anyone – only myself.
Am I asking you to go ‘jump off a cliff’? No, it’s a metaphor. I’m asking you to ‘jump off the cliffs in your life’. If you’re afraid of the water – go swim. If there’s someone you’ve wanted to talk to – go talk to them. If there’s a stranger who catches your eye on the street – give them a big smile.
With this being said, I think it’s important to realise that taking these paths will definitely cause ‘discomfort’. No matter what line of work you do, the minute the stress piles on & you get pushed out of your comfort zone, the butterflies start fluttering in the tummy. The heart starts pounding & you head feels like it wants to explode. However, once you get the job done & you can breathe again & relax, you notice something has happened to you. Most of the time, it wasn’t nearly as bad as you thought it would be, & as a result you’ve stretched yourself past your limits.
Now, confidence, knowledge & expertise have grown. Yes – we’re bigger, better, wiser people for our struggles. This is a law of nature & because we’re part of nature, it’s a law for us too.
No pain, no gain!
So, my humble suggestion is…
Yes, we can give you tips, & of course, if you’re lucky enough to have a mentor then you can take years off your learning curve, but ultimately, it still boils down to you sticking your neck out, taking the plunge & getting your own feet wet.
I love being an female emcee Singapore so much, because it gives me fantastic opportunities. Here are some examples. One day I might be hosting an event for 5,000 pax. The next day may be an event for 60 pax. The next for 2000 pax – all foreign workers from 10 different countries. (Actually this was a really amazing event & I’ll definitely do another blog post on it, but not for today.) And that same evening a ‘swanky’ event for 200 pax. Are all these different types of events challenging – You bet! But how could I possibly become a top notch professional if I didn’t take on the work & opportunities that I’m blessed with.
Problems = Happiness! Yep – when you have a problem & then you solve it – Joy!
Butterflies disappear when you get enough experience, knowledge & expertise – that’s it!
Be fearless & butterflies will fly far away from you…….eventually!
Remember, as a female emcee Singapore, all my problems eventually led me to….Happiness! They will do the same for you too…..Go get em’, tiger!
